What To Do, What To Do?
Realising that I was potentially going to have to do three runs over the next 36 hours, I figured it made sense to take things pretty easy today. I’d planned to do four miles, but the cursed although always-essential toilet break reared its ugly head about 20 minutes into my workout. After that, I polished off another 1.5 miles for a total of 4.19 at an overall pace of about 7:45.
Two sets of splits and charts today:

Tomorrow I plan to do about 20 minutes at 5pm, and another 20 minutes at midnight. I reserve the right to change my mind on the latter, depending on how the rest of my day goes. I have a zillion things to do before getting on my Mississippi-bound airplane on Friday, and I may ultimately decide to run when I get to the States, possibly after a power-nap.
That won’t be fun - we’re flying from London to Chicago and then on to Memphis, which is about 12-13 hours overall, and won’t actually get to our destination (Olive Branch, MS) until at least 7pm (US time) - but part of me thinks it’d be nice to get a good 7-8 hours sleep tomorrow before having to leave for the airport at 7am.
As said, it’s a case of wait and see, depending on how my day goes. I’m bringing my laptop with me, so will continue to update this blog daily, barring some technical disaster, but even then I’ll find a way.
If this was you, would you try and get a run in at midnight tomorrow, thus taking care of Friday’s run (as my per rules), or would you have a good night’s sleep, and then try and run jet-lagged and probably exhausted once you arrived at your destination?

If it were me, I’d skip a day, heheh.
Given your rules, though, I’d run at midnight. I love to run at night, because it can be a lot of fun. You’ll have plenty of time to get jet lagged and rest up during the trip, and then if you need to crash when you arrive you can.

A very good question, indeed. I’ll simply relay my personal experience to you you as the decision is ultimately yours.
I cannot think of any time that I would want to do exercise after getting out of an aircraft in another country. The only exception that I can think of is the invasion of Panama, where I really didn’t have a lack of motivation to get moving!
Usually, even the US Army, plans to get it Soldiers rest after a long movement.
On the other hand, what I love to do and have trouble doing on flights is sleep. So perhaps a run before the flight would help to knock you out for a bit on the plane.
Lastly, even at 7 or 8 PM, the heat is still out there and the humidity is pretty high. I have turned to running in the late evening and early night as a way of breaking everything up and making it fresh for me, but my number one problem with running has been the thick humidity.
Best of luck to you!

If it was me, I’d probably try running jet-lagged once I reach the destination - however, if it was me I would have had a giant FAIL already as far as the running 365 days thing..

I would suggest running beforehand so that you know that it is done while events are under your control. You never know what happens when you are travelling. You may get stuck, detained, who knows?

Cheers for all of your thoughts guys. While I think that yes, on paper it least, it made logistical sense to run at midnight tonight, my wife and I agreed that I was better off getting a full night’s sleep and ‘chilling’ ahead of my big day tomorrow. I’ve already experienced a couple of days in the past sixty where I’ve not slept for as much as a full day and still managed to get my run done, so it shouldn’t be an issue.
We’re due at Olive Branch by about 7pm so we’d have to be five hours late for it to go totally wrong. And if that happens, I’ll run up and down the aisle in the plane four or five hundred times. ![]()
