Now my race is over, I’m shifting my attention back to logging miles. I’m going to be in the States for another couple of weeks, but once I return to the UK I want to move up to fifty-mile weeks. I don’t want to just leap up to that, so I’m going to extend my weekly mileage while I’m here and get there as slowly as possible. It’s only a fortnight so there will be some jumps, but I’ve had an easy couple of weeks since I’ve been here so that’s probably for the best. :)

Day 70It rained heavily this morning and this time it put a real dent in the weather. It was 69 when I woke up and the temperature never went much about the high 70s all day long. I didn’t run until about 11am - it was humid but raining lightly and really quite cool. Pretty much optimum conditions for a longer run.

I planned to take it real easy from the beginning, and wasn’t looking for anything fast at all. I ended up clocking 6.5 miles and it felt good.

Splits:

Day 70 - Splits

My plan is to have longer runs on Sundays and Wednesday, and rotate recovery and speedwork around these times. Normally I’ll do a lot more on a Sunday but I had to cut things short today because of lunch plans.

In other news, we’re up to day 70!

Day 70 already. Time flies.

50 mile weeks are going to be pretty impressive. I’ve just done 2 30 mile weeks and that involved a lot of running.

I did a 32 and a 34 back-to-back just under a month ago. I was making pretty good gains distance-wise then and it’s only because of coming to the States (and the race) that I cut things back. That’s all behind me now and I’m used to it here (although this cooler weather has helped) and feel I’m ready to move up to the next level.

It will also help me stop obsessing with speed. That wasn’t what I was interested in when I started this. I will do speedwork but that stuff will mostly take care of itself. :)

Hey Sheamus,
Good deal on raising your mileage!! Here’s what i’m doing:
Tomorrow will be my 15th straight day of running and i plan on running every single day for the rest of august which will give me 35 consecutive days of running. Plus, each day i will run 5 miles!!

It’s doable i hope!!!

Glad to have you back working the distance. If this weather in the south keeps being nice, than my workouts will improve, also.

I know that you wrote that you’d try to “stop obsessing with speed.” But after one of those medium and long runs, you’re going to look down at your watch and wonder if you could have gone faster or pushed more in mile 4 or whatever.

I know, I have running OCD too!

Yeah, I’ve been that way before and I’m sure I will again, but right now I just want to do two things - one, get my mileage up, and two, lose some weight.

I’m almost certainly going to gain a few pounds while here in the States (it’s pretty much impossible not to as a guest, without being rude or a bit aloof) although that’s generally under control. But I know as I’ve said before I need to strip off another 15-20 pounds to get into really good running shape, if only to stop the pounding on my knees.

I’d like to run more trails, but it’s not really an option in the UK where I live, and to be honest I’m slightly wary of hurting an ankle or something. So my best move right now is less impact on my legs, and to do that I need to shift some pounds. And the easiest way to do that is to up the mileage while controlling my diet, both of which are top of the list when I get back home. :)

6.5 miles would just about me my longest run ever. I’m lucky if i can log 3-4 miles without collapsing! :)
