That’s Better! Well, Kinda…

Day 33As I mentioned yesterday, I had dental surgery booked for 10.50am this morning so felt it was fairly important to get my run done beforehand. Running first thing in the morning is always best, anyway, as it gets it done. Afterwards, you can just get on with the rest of your day. The later you leave it, the more chance something will get in the way. Because of my heinous working schedule of late, it just hasn’t been possible to do this, but it’s certainly the ideal.

I ran at 9am. In the 90 minutes or so beforehand, I consumed a peanut butter wholegrain bagel, about 200ml of orange juice, two cups of coffee, and two pints of water.

Inspired by this article on Steve Prefontaine, my first mile was pretty good - 7:40, which is effectively my current PB. My second was an 8:14, which wasn’t too bad, but, again, once I hit the 20-minute mark I started to crumble. It was all I could do to hold it together at the end, which featured a pair of shocking 8:37s.

Here are the splits:

And here is the chart:

Day 33 - Chart

Overall, it’s a five-second improvement on my average time from yesterday, and eleven seconds better than my time on Wednesday. That trend can’t continue indefinitely but if I can shave a second or two every 24-48 hours it won’t be long before I’m looking at half-decent numbers. My immediate goal is to get my average down below the 8:00 mark, which hopefully I can achieve by about day 50.

It will be interesting to see how much you improve before your times start tapering off.

Yes. The improvements have been sharp lately but as I said in this post that won’t continue forever. One imagines I’ll stick around 8mins/mile for a while, simply because of the deterioration I always seem to have around the 20-minute mark on my runs. Having a very fast first mile at the expense of a very slow last one isn’t good practice. It was better today, though.
