It was pouring with rain when I woke up this morning and it stayed that way pretty much all day. We even drove to a mall to try and track down some kind of headwear for me, to no avail - it’s pretty tough to track down a cap that is suitable for running and offers heat protection, cooling properties and protects you from the rain* - but thankfully by the time we got back home the rain had eased off.

Day 72Tomorrow I plan to do my longest run since I’ve been here so was always going to take it easy today. I just wanted to get a little bit of life into my legs but wasn’t too concerned with being out there for a long time. Also, now I’m used to running in the mornings, all the stuff that makes up ‘the day’ - eating, walking, visiting, socialising, lazing around, etc - seems to just weigh you down. It’s funny because back home I pretty much always ran in the afternoon, but it just shows how easy it is to establish a new habit. And a positive one in my opinion, for the reasons outlined above - the later you leave your run, the more stuff can and often will get in the way.

Still, I made pretty solid nutritional choices throughout the day - one large oatmeal raisin cookie aside (one of my many weaknesses) at Starbucks (another one) - and the run was reasonably solid.

Splits and chart:

Tomorrow, weather permitting, it’s back to the earlier starts. If it’s raining hard again I’m not really sure what I’m going to do - I didn’t bring any cold-weather clothing with me at all, let alone running apparel - so I guess I’ll just have to suffer. The forecast says it’s only a slight chance so hopefully it’ll hold off until I’m done. :)

* Again, it’s probably too late to help me here, now, but the best headwear I’ve been able to come up with is this Injinji Performance Desert Hat, but it’s going to look just a little like overkill back home!

You said it … that hat would be “overkill.” I prefer to wear a fleece “watch” cap during colder weather.

I could just see you running through the green fields of England in that hat!

Seriously, if you were to compare hats and haircuts, this hat would be the Mullet of hats.

I’ve been happy using a buff. (Yeah, just like on survivor. I feel so trendy). You can pick them up at REI, and probably most other sporting goods stores.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about those Buff caps but can’t find them anywhere. This REI store you speak of - the nearest one is over 200 miles away. Nobody I’ve been to seems to store Buff at all. Might be online or bust, but I hate doing stuff like that without trying it on first.

Injinji does a cap that will work, but again I’d like to try one on before purchase. Rock/hard place, here I come. :)

You’re getting used to running in the mornings - but man, i’m not sure if i could. I try to get up in the morning and go running and I just feel so stiff, tired and not motivated. I suppose that could change if i started making the change.. who knows. :)

Sheamus, i know your Starbucks weakness very well because i share that very same weakness dude!! Have you tried the new smoothies they have there? I am currently obsessed with the banana/chocolate with some sort of protein powder and 2 shots of espresso!!

Definitely check out the buff that Rahn suggested!! http://www.rei.com i know its hard to order from online but rei is very reliable!!!

I’m pretty consistent with my order at Starbucks - a double-tall soya cappuccino - but every so often I’ll attempt one of their frozen treats. I say attempt, because all the whipped cream and caramel and stuff they put on top isn’t really for me. I like the taste for the first couple of slurps, but halfway through and certainly by the end I usually feel pretty rotten about the experience. Starbucks do the best cakes and cookies, though, so they usually win me over there instead. In the UK they do this blueberry cheesecake which really is the best.

What sort of Buff cap do you guys have? I was looking at their website the other day and most of them are these horrendous-looking multicoloured monstrosities! ;)

I’ll check out REI online - it’s too late to order in the States now (I’m still waiting for an Amazon.com DVD to arrive that was ’shipped’ on July 29 - I’ve never none anything so slow) but maybe I can find somewhere back home.
