Early Morning Runner
That’s better!
75F is a lot nicer than 99F. A lot. The only thing that was tricky was the humidity - this time of the day it always seems to be around 100 per cent. That made breathing tricky. It made me think of how it must be running at altitude - every time I tried to fill my lungs with air, my breath would catch at a point that felt around ten or twenty per cent short. Like 80-90 per cent capacity. This panicked me for the first mile or so but after that I got used to it. It was never pleasant, but was far from terminal.
Indeed, my last mile was faster than my second, and for a period there I was running at a 6:30 pace.
I was up at 5:30am today and had a small breakfast - some trail mix and a banana, with coffee - before my workout. I’m not sure if this helped or hindered - one problem I’ve had since coming to the states, if I can be quite frank, is constipation. My stomach has felt bloated all the time since I’ve been here. Hopefully, if I can resume my normal diet, I can help my body (ahem) take care of business. We’re going to the store today and I’m going to stock up on the good stuff - muesli, soy milk, wholewheat bread and peanut butter, but also almond butter and Ezekiel bread, both of which everybody seems to rave about but I’ve never tried (they’re not available in the UK, at least not easily.)
Splits and chart:

My loop is almost exactly one mile so that’s worked out quite well. I’ll do 3-4 miles all week ahead of what I hope will my first race on Saturday. ![]()

Funny you should mention Ezekiel bread and taking care of business. My body is now very trained on “voiding” itself about 15-30 minutes after I get up. Seems perfect since I have to go into work early, take a meeting, account for the younger Soldiers and then do physical training.
The catch, of course is fiber. over the last three weeks my bed-time snack has been Ezekiel bread with either natural peanut butter or honey (sugar fix) and sprinkled with flax seed. That seems to make everything “work out” superbly.

Yes, fibre is the key, of course. It’s very easy here to avoid fibre almost completely by eating out regularly and having good ol’ Southern cooking at home (which tastes amazing, most of the time, but isn’t really ideal for staying in great shape).
As said we’re going to the store later today and I’m stocking up on the good stuff! I’m so used to what I eat at home now that while a lot of this stuff tastes great going in, it leaves me feeling awful and horribly bloated for hours afterwards.
Hopefully this Ezekiel bread is a winner - I’ve been reading about it for years and it seems like my kind of thing.

Hmm…I’ve never heard of the Ezekiel bread. I don’t think we get it here.
It seems you either have to run with heat and lower humidity or high humidity and lower heat. Which is better?

The lower heat is a *lot* better.
Couldn’t find the Ezekiel bread anywhere. We’re going to try a whole foods market in the next day or so.

Hi Sheamus,
I love love love Ezekiel bread! Is there a Trader Joe’s anywhere near you? They carry Ezekiel! I am not sure if Whole Foods does, at least not the one i go to!!
Listen, if you cannot find the bread, i know this sounds ridiculous but i would be willing to buy it for you and send it to you! OK, even typing that out sounds ridiculous, but the offer is there!!! They even have english muffins. I buy the cinnamon raisin english muffins and eat it with almond butter and just a drop of honey!! Very good!!
Let me know!

I may have to take you up on that offer Michelle! While I’ve found Ezekiel cereal at a few places, no luck on the bread thus far. We have a few ‘whole food’ type market places to check out - including one place called Wild Oats or somesuch - and I’ve been promised by a some knowledgable types that I should be able to track it down here. Same thing goes for the almond butter.
Meantime, I’m thrilled that I’ve not only found and experienced the joy of the Clif Bar, but that they’re ten-for-$10, too. ![]()
