Crap Talk
Today before my run I had a Clif bar, 16oz of water and an 8oz G2.
Didn’t make much of a difference.
After a mile I was getting that familiar feeling. This was, again, despite going before I left. After two miles, I was inclined to stop, but pushed on. After three miles, I had to stop. It’s hard enough running in this heat as it is, let alone when there’s something in your body that’s desperate to escape.
That’s a weird feeling, too - you want to walk, as that relieves the strain (so to speak), but you know that you’ll get home twice as fast running, so you try to find some middle ground, and just over 8:00/mile seemed about right.
Le sigh.
There’s a fair bit of fibre in the Clif bar, of course, so tomorrow it’s just water and Coke for me, and we’ll see what happens. I can’t really explain why this is going on - it isn’t making an awful lot of sense, as I never experience this at home. I think I’m going to have to experiment with Spartan7’s tip and have a big old slice of wholewheat bread with peanut butter and water just before retiring to bed, and hope things then take care of themselves as soon as I get up.
The curious thing is back home 8am is pretty much the time I go every day anyway - you can set your watch by it. And I’m running here at 8am, because that’s when the race starts on Saturday and I wanted to acclimatise. However, my body should still be thinking it’s 1pm. Or should it? I mean, I’ve only been here just over five days - can it catch up that quickly? The rest of me hasn’t - I’m yawning my ass off every night by 7pm.

I suspect your body may just be adjusting to the new time zone.
Hopefully it sorts itself out soon eh.

Hey just curious, why do you drink coke before a run? The sugar? I totally stay away from that stuff, its not good dude!!!

Ah, there’s nothing wrong with Coke. at least from my perspective. Studies have shown that it hits your body faster, energy-wise, than pretty much anything else (legal) out there on the market. There’s a reason all the top Ironman athletes drink it in their long training sessions and the races themselves - it’s instant energy. Of course, it’s better to drink it flat.
I like Coke before runs, certainly longer ones, because it picks me up and provides a quick and semi-sustainable energy source because of the carbs (sugar) and caffeine. Normally I only use it for longer runs but as said I don’t like running on a completely empty stomach, certainly after waking up. I don’t want a full stomach, and I always give myself time to digest things, but I like to have got something down before setting out.
The rest of the time I consume sugar-free drinks. But as said not much compares to flat Coke if you need an immediate boost.
I’m not a purist about food at all - life is too short and would be far too dull to eliminate all the good stuff completely, which is why my 80-20 attitude towards nutrition works perfectly for me. But people have their own likes and dislikes and levels of acceptability and all that and that’s how it should be! ![]()

Yes, your right. Sorry about judging you about the coke!! It’s just not something i prefer to drink. For me, its just too sweet!!! :O)

Nah, no judging implied.
As said each to their own, and that’s totally the way it should be!
It is sweet - I prefer Diet Coke (actually my favourite is Cherry Coke Zero) - but it’s an efficient source of easy calories and it doesn’t upset your stomach at all.

Go back to drinking the coffee. You’ve been drinking it so long that you’re good with it. I usually have a cup before PT. I tell all my new guys not to do it.
I truly believe it’s the “change of venue” that is causing you problems. Used to affect me a lot, too. Especially going to Kuwait … hot, sandy, smelly place.
I’ve always preferred Mountain Dew to any other soft drink. Not as much carbonation as the other soft drinks, and it goes well mixed with energy drinks. I’m off sugars for the most part also, but for the long runs and for the longer road marches, I love to “Do the Dew!”

The funny thing about Mountain Dew is in the UK we pronounce ‘Dew’ the same way we pronounce ‘Jew’.
Makes for some curious looks at the drive-thru, let me tell you.

I’ll bet its the different surroundings that are getting you. It doesn’t really happen to me, but i have a friend that every time he goes on a trip, he gets all bound up (the opposite I guess). There was one camping trip where he didn’t go for an entire week. I think he was in a bit of pain by the time it was done.
